Hello!

Hey everyone, just sticking a post up to say hello! I'm glad to be working with all of you and I look forward to seeing what we can come up with!

  • Hey

I'm looking forward to working with this group as well. It ought to be fun.

Since I've suddenly become such a fan of the web page for EMU's journalism department, I thought I'd post a link to it and a comment or two.

After looking at their site more closely, I think the positives about it go beyond the visual style. They have the kind of information a student would find valuable. Like Krause was saying in class, many of the academic websites for Eastern are organized by department rather than by major, which is how most students would likely approach information-gathering. I liked how the journalism site includes information about the requirements of the major and minor, making the site more user-friendly as far as students and potential students are concerned.

I have just a couple of minor criticisms. The page links along the side change from roman to italic type when you mouse over and when you bring each page up. It's a very subtle effect. I thought it might be a little too subtle. Do you think that's effective for navigation, or would a slightly more obvious change to the active links make them easier to follow?

Another thing I think they could have done is to include more graphics, but maybe that's just me. I need things explained to me in simple language, and I like pictures. The sleek, minimal style of the journalism site appealed to me right away. With the right images, I think they could broaden the appeal and usefulness of the site and still preserve its style.

I'd like to know what you all think.

Kelly, I think this blog was a great idea.

Other examples of good (and even bad) web style we can pull together in this blog could help us get a dialogue going about what constitues good style and the types of ideas we can apply towards this project.

    Talk to you all soon.

  • I like what Gerry said about using some graphics. I don't think we should use many, due to the download time, but some kind of visual makes sites more interesting and inviting (at least, to me!)

I like the journalism site, but I wish the greens matched up more with the rest of the site.
